International Women’s Day #IWD2019 - Spotlight on 10x Women Leaders in Science

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.


To help celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve put together a video playlist of some fierce #womeninscience talking about topics ranging from immunotherapy to the microbiome to mapping the maternal-fetal interface on a single cell level.

1. Metagenomic Assembly with Linked-Read Sequencing (Webinar)



Dr. Ami Bhatt, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Genetics at Stanford University

Dr. Bhatt received her MD and PhD from UC San Francisco. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Chen Award of Excellence from the Human Genome Organization and a Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator award. She is also the co-founder and president of Global Oncology, a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring the best cancer care to underserved patients around the world.


Dr. Bhatt’s research program at Stanford is dedicated to characterizing and dissecting the microbe-human interface.  Her group applies modern genetic, molecular and computational techniques to better understand host-microbe interactions and how perturbing these interactions may cause human disease phenotypes.


2. Single-cell reconstruction of the early maternal–fetal interface in humans (Webinar)


Dr. Roser Vento-Tormo.jpgDr. Roser Vento-Tormo, Wellcome Sanger Institute

Roser Vento-Tormo is an EMBO/HFSP postdoctoral fellow in Sarah Teichmann lab at the Sanger Institute, Cambridge (UK). Roser is interested in using single-cell transcriptomics to study cell-cell communication. Her work now focuses on mapping the female reproductive tissue, and studying maternal-fetal communication during pregnancy using single-cell transcriptomics. Before coming to Cambridge, Roser Vento-Tormo did her PhD in University of Barcelona, studying the epigenetic regulation of the innate immune response. Roser earned a bachelor in biotechnology and a master in biomedical biotechnology in the Polytechnic University of Valencia.


Dr. Mirjana Efremova.jpgDr. Mirjana Efremova, Wellcome Sanger Institute

Mirjana Efremova completed her PhD in the field of computational cancer immunology at the Medical University of Innsbruck. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Sarah Teichmann’s Lab at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, where she is applying single cell technologies and computational approaches to study the cellular diversity within different tissues. She is particularly interested in developing computational methods for inferring cell-cell communication networks.


3. Analyzing Infiltrating B cell Populations in the Tumor Microenvironment Using Single Cell Transcriptomics (AACR 2018 Poster Presentation)



Dr. Sarah Taylor, Senior Scientist, 10x Genomics

Sarah holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Since completing her Ph.D. and postdoc, Sarah has worked extensively on the development of single cell sequencing assays for examining the immune repertoire. Sarah now runs immunology collaborations at 10x, working with customers to explore exciting immunological questions.


4. Single Cell RNA-seq Unveils Mechanisms of Response and Resistance to Immunotherapy (AACR 2018 Presentation)



Prof. Aude Chapuis, MD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Dr. Chapuis is a professor and assistant member of the Clinical Research Division at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology. Dr. Chapuis is an expert in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and in developing novel ways to help a patient’s immune system target life-threatening viral infections and various malignancies.


Translational research in Dr. Chapuis’ laboratory is focused on developing novel ways to modulate the immune system to target cancer, better understand factors associated with successful “adoptive” transfer of immune T-cells and developing methods that improve the survival, proliferation and anti-tumor activity of infused T cells to better eliminate tumor targets.


5. 10x-Pert Workshop: Tumor Dissociation for Single Cell RNA-seq (Webinar)



Dr. Jill Herschleb, Director, Sample Preparation, 10x Genomics

Jill holds a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular biology. For the last 15 years, she has worked on technology development for high resolution genome analysis, including optical mapping, long read sequencing, and precision molecular counting. Currently, she runs the sample prep research group at 10x.



Dr. Sharmila Chatterjee, Scientist, Sample Preparation, 10x Genomics

Sharmila holds a Ph.D. in Physiology. She has worked on different aspects of cell biology, including using the mouse as a model system to study developmental biology. Currently she is a member of the sample prep group at 10x and is dedicated to developing new demonstrated protocols for Chromium Single Cell Gene Expression Solution.
